What is Dark Age Legends? - DevLog#1

Welcome to first DevLog of Dark Age Legends! In this article, we'll be talking about the game's inspirations, core mechanics and story. However, there won't be too much details because we don't want to bore you from the beggining. Hopefully, all details about the game we'll be told in future DevLogs.

First Things First! What is Dark Age Legends?

Dark Age Legends: Necromancer's Bane is a party-based RPG rogue-like game with turn-based combat mechanics.

Rogue-like

Rogue-like games have become very popular in recent years. One of the main reasons for this is that each run feels unique and different in these games. As a result, the game feels innovative every time and can offer new content to the player even after a fairly long play time. Additionally, the player's decisions directly impact their success, allowing them to experience a stronger RPG-like feeling.

We wanted to incorporate all of these positive features into our game, so we decided to make a game in the rogue-like genre. Especially for indie productions, providing a long game duration and content is not really easy, and in fact, one of the reasons why this genre is so popular, especially among indie and smaller productions, is this. Rogue-like is actually a very successful formula that eliminates this difficulty.

Turn-Based

We have provided an innovative and long gameplay (partially) in this way. However, if the gameplay is not of high quality and entertaining, no matter how new and long it is, it doesn't make much sense, right? So, what strategy should we have adopted at this point? Speaking of strategy, we really love strategy games. If we do what we love, we will probably be successful. So, there must be strategy involved in this! And what games have the best strategy mechanics? Of course, turn-based games!

When we were kids, we loved playing DragonFable and spent hours, days, and even weeks playing Divinity 2, perhaps the most successful modern example of this genre. We believe that we can create a great turn-based action system. During the action, we want the player to move as if solving a puzzle by finding the most accurate strategy. This will definitely require a considerable amount of thinking time. Therefore, in this respect, we can say that a turn-based system is the best option.

Party-Based

We wanted each run to be a new and unique adventure, with plenty of choices for the player. How could we increase the number of choices and make each run more special? By adding new characters to the game, of course. However, just adding new characters wouldn't be enough. If we could create a party-based system, each party formed by different character combinations would provide a unique gameplay experience. Moreover, choosing the right character combinations should be part of the overall strategy, and the player should start thinking about their strategies long before the action begins.

RPG

We are trying to create a world here, not just a game. We want players to be a part of this world, to listen to the stories of this world together. Our game takes place in a fantasy world, like many other RPG games. There are different races, creatures, spells, ages, and unique stories in this world, which we are sure will attract the attention of those who love fantasy worlds. In fact, we have already released a game that takes place in the same world for mobile devices (you can access the page of the game from this link). We are making a game that takes place in the same world, more than that, we want to create many games that take place in this world to expand it as much as possible. In fact, we have many people in our Discord channel who love this fantasy world. (You can join us from this link.)

Story

Finally, without dragging on the topic and boring you, we would like to tell you a bit about the story.

In a far-off corner of the land, a wizard who delved into dark magic and necromancy began to rise in power. He began his conquests, spreading terror and death. Anyone who crossed his path was forced to join his army of the undead, and he continued to grow stronger each day. The greatest champions of the land faced this growing threat and stood against the necromancer to eliminate him. However, defeating him proved to be very difficult in the face of his power, and many of the champions, after an honorable death, were resurrected and joined his army. The survivors either fled or chose to willingly side with his power.
Now, the forgotten champions of the land have come together again to face the necromancer and destroy him, becoming legends themselves.

So, that's the story in brief, but of course, each character has their own unique story which is more detailed. If you ever play the game (hopefully you will), you can access these stories in detail.

Conculusion

In our first devlog, we wanted to talk about the basic structure and story of the game. We plan to regularly share new devlogs in the coming weeks, where we will explain more detailed mechanics and share content from the game. Feel free to leave a comment with any questions you may have or things you would like us to cover in future devlogs.

Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy it. See you later!

Wait, wait, wait! Before you go, if you add our game to your Steam wishlist, it would be a great help to us and we would be very grateful. Here is the Steam link. Take care!
